DIY Mosaic Picture Frame

Hi! This is my first blog post, so bear with me if it's really bad. Today I will show you how to make a mosaic-looking photo frame out of old CDs. Now, let's get into it!

The first thing I did was gather all of my supplies. You will need:

  • Cardboard or a cereal box
  • Construction or Scrapbook Paper
  • CDs or DVDs
  • Photo
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Glue stick
  • Glue Gun
  • Hammer
  • Old Towel
  • Optional: X-acto Knife
First, I tried cutting out my CDs with scissors. That didn't work out, because they all ended up cracking, so I ended up taking a hammer and a towel outside. I sandwiched the CD between an old towel (Towel on top, CD in the middle, towel under CD). After I sandwiched them, I took the hammer and smashed them. They should look like this:

Okay, after that, I got my cereal box and I opened it up, so it was flat. Then I folded the two front sides of the box, the picture sides and glued them together. Now all I had was some thicker brown-colored cardstock. Here's the tricky part: I first traced my photo onto the cardboard. Then I got my ruler and marked a 1/2 inch into the traced photo, making a smaller square inside the traced photo. Then, from the traced photo, I got my ruler out again, and marked 1 1/2 inches outward, making a bigger box. You should have 3 overlapping rectangles. I know the photo shown is really bad, but this is my first post, so cut me some slack!

After the hard part, I got my scissors out and cut the smallest rectangle. Feel free to use an X-acto knife for this, but I couldn't find mine. It should now look like this:

Then, I got out my green construction paper. You can use whatever colored paper you want, but I chose green because it matched the color of my photo. I glued my paper to the cardstock, and cut the edges off, like this:

After that, I put some glue on the other side, and I folded the paper underneath. Now, you might notice that there is still paper in the middle, where the photo is supposed to go. To fix that, I got out my scissors, because I sill couldn't find my X-acto knife. I cut out the paper inside. It should now look like this:

Then, I arranged all of the CDs on the frame, and when I was happy with how it looked, I took out my glue gun and glued the pieces on. Mine looks like this:

Then, I got my photo and another piece of cardboard. I put the photo in the frame and glued the cardstock to the back of it. This is the finished product:

Enjoy! I had lots of fun making this DIY, and I hope you try it out sometime!

Until next week,
